iPhone 3GS - Image 1

As expected, the iPhone DevTeam made short work out of the new iPhone 3GS and the team is now perfectly capable of jailbreaking the new model. For now, however, the team decided not to release the files for public use.

As posted on the DevTeam's blog:

We can jailbreak the 3GS right now. But making our jailbreak public at this point in time would benefit relatively few people. It would in fact be detrimental to many more people than it would help. So we feel it’s best to keep our version of the jailbreak out of Apple’s sights for the time being.

The DevTeam believes that there still aren't many 3GS owners out there, much less those that have done a full USB dump or captured img3s signed with ECID. Even with a million in sales in three days, the 3GS still does not have a big enough population to benefit from the jailbreak, as compared to when millions more have gotten it. "There are parts of the globe where you can't even buy a 3GS yet!" the DevTeam noted.

"Here’s the critical point," they said. "...the reason why we’re delaying our version of the jailbreak: Once the jailbreak is out, Apple will fix the iBoot-family bug we use to accomplish it. They will simply stop signing the old iBoots and only sign the fixed ones.  If you bought your phone after Apple has done this, there’s nothing you can do…the jailbreak isn’t going to work for you."

They also note that Apple is sure to come up with a 3.0.1 firmware release shortly to fix ultrasn0w, apart from other problems with the 3.0. As it is, patience is a virtue, so those who already have a 3GS could wait a bit more for the benefit of a greater population.

» This is a crap reason to delay the jailbreak

It doesn't matter how long they wait, Apple is going to patch what they release. They will crack whatever Apple puts out to patch this, regardless. Them claiming it has something to do with 3.0.1 is a *****ing joke. 3.0.1 hasn't been announced yet, it hasn't been seeded to Devs yet, it won't be released for another 2-4 weeks at bare minimum, and we're all going to wait because some countries can't buy them yet.

***** you, dev-team.

» i dont think you get it

theyre not releasing it so apple cant fix it right away and then when everyone else gets a 3gs they will be able to hack the phone

» Yeah, lets wait for 4.0 before jailbreak!

Seriously, that's a fat ton of crap. By that logic, they should wait until the 4.0 software update before releasing the jailbreak, because that way, even MORE phones can be jailbroken and they'll have even less work to do for the 3G S and the new software updates.

Hell, let's just wait until the next hardware revision comes out. That way we KNOW they won't fix it in the hardware. Idiots.

 » Be patient

If 3.0.1 doesn't get released within the next 2 weeks then the dev team will release the jailbreak anyway, all they want is to maximize the amount of people who can jailbreak.
