Skype on iPhone - Image 1A new era is dawning. Skype finally hits the iPhone tomorrow, Tuesday, and you better be ready for a Day 1 download. They'll be launching their VoiP application through the App Store.

Yes, it's going to be a free download too.

Now just so you know, the Skype calls on the iPhone will be done via Wi-Fi networks. Skype-to-Skype calls will be free, while connecting to other lines will have charges.

It's going to work pretty much as it does on your computer, only now it's more mobile, and the skin matches that of the iPhone GUI.

With this big breakthrough, it looks like fring's met its match. It got a few months already, but now, big boy Skype's in town.

don't you have to pay for a phone plan to use the internet on this thing? I don't see the point of making skype calls on your cell phone. I mean, if i had the option of using a cell plan or connecting to the internet and making a call that way, i would just use the cell phone.

You use the WiFi access the iPhone has to make calls, not the 3G (that you may have to pay for, I'm not sure). You can only use the WiFi as of the first release but this may change in time, as other phones with skype can use 3G to make calls. This means its still free, but not as accessible.

This is retarded. Why would you use voip when you have a cell phone you are paying for already? Maybe if you were in a crunch on minutes for the month, MAYBE. Just another useless iPhone app, lord knows they already have a ton of those.

wtf?.... skype its really usefull on a phone... i mean if i need to call somebody from another city or maybe country i can just call them to their skype account and forget about bills.

and well in my country long distance calls are darn expensive.

 » Not relevant

In the US, in country long distance is no cost included in your phone contract. Skype is irrelevant unless you are calling internationally cause of this.

I remember when the PSP got Skype... Sigh, hopefully this won't bring up an argument about how the iPhone is "dominating" the PSP, etc. They're both special in their own ways :) .
