Analyst: iPod Touch to kill off PSP - Image 1

Another one boards the iPhone-greater-than-PSP wagon. This time it's Game Brief analyst Nicholas Lovell, who says that the Apple device will be the "final nail in the PSP's coffin," having three times more games than the DS, and five times more than the PSP.

The iPod Touch is rapidly becoming the portable media player of choice amongst a younger audience, exactly the place that Sony wanted to be with the PSP.

[The iPod Touch] is an easy-to-use device that offers consumers their music, podcasts, short-form video and accessible games on the move and in my opinion, will be the final nail in the PSP’s coffin.

While he says that it's the games that make the platform, he argues that the iPhone is changing the name of the game. It's no longer "the content per se" that matters, "but the ease of getting it that makes a difference," talking about the vending machine ease of the AppStore. If that's the case, then let's hope David Perry was right and Sony is going digital.

Let's also not forget that Sony promised to reinvigorate the PSP this year. It's still early in the year and we've yet to see them make good on the promise. And as wonderful as the iPhone is, I doubt it's going to kill the PSP. After all, it's still a phone at heart, and ease of acquiring games just can't substitute for the power and the game library of the PSP.

iPod Touch, the overpriced tool of the Starbuck drinking, Ugg boot wearing, yoga practicing, Twilight-reading, karma-chatting, shallow urbanite showoff that thinks such things elevate his or her status in life.

Every fourth fool in my city flaunts these dumb things, and half of them look like they can barely afford rent. I wish the whole lot of them end up mugged (only after the treehuggers, male and female alike, that flaunt their Solitaire-driving Apple laptops in public places though).

Just saying.

iPhones aren't that bad once you get it hacked and download the necessary features so you can have greats apps for free. iPod Touch is useless compared to the iPhone. The games for iPhone sucks so I don't think games are what makes the iPhones good. My PSP on the other hand has PS, Emulators, and PSP games so it's the best for gaming.

 » Apple Just Blows

And the Meizu M8 will probably blow the iPhone off the planet just as the Meizu Miniplayer did to the iPod Nano in just about every category.

That said, I still think the iPod Touch (and Meizu M8) are toys that nobody truly needs, while the iPod Nano is an overprice and underfeatured ripoff compared to the Meizu Miniplayer, which is superior in just about every way -- particularly sound quality.

Anyway the iPod touch is a great device and has a few decent games. It isnt going to kill the PSP though touch controls will never be better than actual buttons.

gamewise, the psp is excelent in every way compared to ipod touch, hell even DS is much much better than ipod touch in gaming.
nobody in their right mind would prefer portable gaming on ipod touch rather than PSP or DS.
only media junkies will prefer ipod touch.
i bring my psp everyday wherever i go, even at work.
my ipod touch 16gb 1st gen is only used when go to the toilet and watch some porn for 5 minutes, most of the times the psp alternates because of the homebrew that enables more flash movie sites.

Nowadays A LOT of people have both like myself.....I got an iPod Touch 32gb with ALL my music on it but that doesnt mean I dont have my *****in' Sim City on there playing it till my Batt dies! I also got the PSP FAT(because IR SHELL in my eyes is the most usefull APP ive ever had on anything.) for my games....but I'll be damned if I aint got a 8gb mem card filled to the brimm with music for on the go. No!....... Maybe most of this world has moved on, maybe theres a such thing as Warm, and Bi. ***** man theres dusk AND dawn.....for those indecisive folks. This analyst apparently has a hardon for 4pple, sure it has more games but that doesnt mean that they're better! How about this 4pple makes a $150 Iphone/Ipod, and Sony makes the $450 PSP tell me which ones gonna be better COOOMMMOOONNN NICK!!!!! Get you ***** out the dirt and look at the sun for once.

   Re: xche78x - 2009-02-27
» people saying the psp has no games

should play with their ps2, ds or any other gaming machine that they think has games.
all consoles and handhelds have games and great games, it just depends on the users game preference.
compared to the wii, gamecube and or gameboy advance, the psp has a good library with lots of great games. its just that some people asks too much. and people tend to forget the psp is also a ps1 consoles hence you can add all the ps1 games to the psp library.

Not exactly a full un-tethered jailbreak but there are two version released. A tethered one where you have to boot using a computer and a semi-tethered one where you have to boot to jailbroken mode using a computer but you can boot into unjailbroken(normal) mode normally without a computer.

I just recently got an iPod Touch and I haven't touched my PSP since. Sure the games aren't as top notch but it completely blows the PSP away at everything else. Not to mention it makes the PSP look like a brick.

It has only been out for about two years but it already has a huge userbase. Meanwhile the PSP is slowly sinking in sales. There's no doubt that it will kill the PSP.

 » hmm.. i know

Sony could grow some balls and COMPETE with them :O

APP STORE:: Free or inexpensive home brew:
people make an app for the PSP, submit it to sony to check to see if its got epic flaws or lets you do anything illegal, and if not, post it on the app store.

DIGITAL:: like the other article says, DL games via internet.. its a lot better than carrying around those stupid UMD's.. and saves battery power :D

SMALLER:: without the UMD tray, the size of the console could be HALVED.

MORE POWERFUL:: without the UMD tray, thers more room for creativity, beef up the CPU and maybe internal storage?

although that would cost slightly more than say, the 3000 it would be totally worth it. If i ran the company id be patrolling this site and forums for ideas sense a large portion of the community is represented here.

 » Apple's and Banana's

LOLZ! IPOD Touch??? ONE word = SUCKS! why?
It's expensive, too little memory in it.

I got 16GB in my psp, a whole ton of music, Video, Picture, and even ISO's from my games which I backed-up on my memory card.

Oh hold on.....it doesn't end there just yet. The 16GB I have is an Micro SD card, which I have the adaptor to be a Pro Duo. That means I can use my 16GB on my Blackberry Curve =P that means even more benefits for me! Music, Video, Pictures for my phone tooooo. And if that's not all, I'm going to buy a Duo micro SD adaptor to Pro Duo, so I can link to 16GB and make it into a 32GB memory card for my PSP. =P Not tats what I call Nice!

Oh wait.....there's more, I can use my Micro SD with the adaptor to use it on my Sony 12.1Mega Pixel Camera! That means, Click! Picture, transfer to PSP, set as wall paper, or phone, etc.... Plus don't forget about the Video on the Digital Camera, yea! tat means videos on PSP and Blackberry Phone!!!

=P HA!!!! IPOD try to beat that......... Oh wait you can't! because u only have a small amount of memory. Yea there's app's for Ipod Touch, so what!? Blackberry has App's too! Especially the Word,Excel,Spreadsheet, and PDF viewer, what else can I ask!? Nothing

Because 16GB + PSP + Camera + Blackberry = Heaven!!!
IPOD Touch = ?? WTF is this??? lolz

You always have to think outside the Box. At first I was going to get an Ipod Touch, but I had a psp, had a 4GB Memory stick. but then came my Blackberry, then came my Micro SD and then got everything and BANG! I created the Perfect combo.

Perfect Combo = "Priceless"
=P

   Re: xche78x - 2009-02-27
 » agreed

sometimes or most of the times, the ipod touch just doesnt make sense to carry around.
i also use a micro sd with pro duo converter from photofast.
use it on my psp, when the psp battery runs out, i just put the micro sd to my DS with flash card, then the music listening continues. after that when the DS runs out of juice i put my micro sd to my celfon SO905i which is a sony walkman phone which plays my music (also shows photo and videos) then i have non stop entertainment all day. the ipod touch just sits in the closet.

   Re: raggedjimmi - 2009-02-27
 » -

Hold up! You're saying it's expensive. So that's a PSP+official 16gb memory card.

£130+130+ £260
A 16gb iPod Touch is £214! The 32gb Touch is only £20 more!! LOL

And btw the PSP makes a terrible MP3 player. No playlist support, no ratings, no smart playlist, horrible sound quality compared to iPod or Zune (real mp3 players) due to the poor sound chip.

Oh and the "small amount" of memory on an iPhone is the same 16gb that you were banging on about earlier! WTF!

I know it sounds like you enjoy your setup. Or maybe not since you feel the need to reinforce it. But really your views sound VERY old, where you only playing with a 1sg gen 4gb iPhone? They have moved on, you know.
Also- GPS. :)

@ raggedjimmi

PSPs MP3 is good, and the visualizers kick some major ass. also, the PSP supports playlists and M3u files [try researching a bit first] PSP has a GPS attachment. Also the screen is bigger and theres more apps [free] and better emulators for PSP..

 » Hah

I own both, and while as a work tool the iPhone is awesome (great email client, good music player, excellent interface, plentiful storage) it can't even muster a decent game of Pac Man. How exactly will that kill the PSP as a portable gaming machine.

The point about digital downloads is well made, and it will be the future direction of the PSP if only to kill the second hand market. The only thing I'm a bit uneasy about is importing - half my PSP collection is imported games, and if Sony suck as hard with digital content as they do now, I might even avoid the PSP2 for that reason. Case in point is the Euro release of SF2HD - a 3 month delay and for what reason?

If they region lock PSP2, then I may have to pass, if only because SCEE are utterly incompetent.

For games I'd rather play the PSP.

For everything else I'd rather use my iPhone. It's a better MP3 player (PSP is more like a portable free version of Quicktime, iPhone is a portable iTunes). Better video playback. MUCH, omg VERY MUCH better internet browser... it's actually useable on an iPhone! Online music AND app store. Smaller, lighter. Better screen with no ghosting and scratch resistant. Much more robust and stronger. Better wifi reception, bluetooth, 3G, higher res camera than the PSP's paid accessory. Email built in, faster boot times, longer battery life. Many many more apps and free ones too.

The only thing it lacks is physical buttons thats good. I don't want a joypad accessory, I don't want a physical keyboard. I want to keep my devices seperate so if the battery goes on one I'm not stuck on a train with nothing to do!

   by CityNightRush117 - 2009-02-27
 » Dude, shut up.

The iPod is the better choice as a mp3/video player, but the PSP was originally designed as a hardcore portable gaming platform, not a damn touch-screen iCandy brick. I admit that Apple, has succeeded in creating a multimedia device better than the PSP, who can argue with that? But as far as gaming goes, the PSP pwns the iPod and the iPhone ten-fold. If I remember correctly, both use crappy 3D-imitating sprites instead of using solid 3D. Why is that? Gaming on an iPhone or iPod is silly. Just stay with portable audio/video playback Apple, Sony is the real gaming genius of portables. Which would you get? A PSP that can be hacked and turned into a God for as little as $169 (without memory stick) or buy a cookie that tries to play in the big leagues with it's crappy touch-screen controls for over $250? Bestbuy recently had a deal on 8GB memsticks for $40 so it still costs less than a damn iPod (not to mention the iPhone requires the internet package from AT&T in order to even function as a phone which racks your monthly phone bill up to $199 a month anyways! iPods require constant updating and service whenever you flick it or corrupt it with bad files). With a new PSP on the year's horizon, I fail to see any proof that Apple's iPod Touch beats Sony's PSP.

(Oh, btw, just about any kind of 2D game can go onto an iPod or iPhone, after all, there are thousands and thousands of 2D games out there where there is only a small fraction of 3D games that can be played portably at the present time. Think about it Apple, all you did was revive the Gameboy - the godfather of portable gaming.)

For some reason I dont think that Nicholas Lovell disagrees with what most of you are saying. PSP is better for Games and Itouch is good for MP3s and Video. maybe sony will realize that ppl just want to use a device with one damn hand. cellphones and itouch have been letting us do this for quite a while now. thats one reason i think itouch is better for psp for gaming. it is also a way better tool for web browsing and pdf reading. i want an itouch so i can read gamefaqs, browse qj and let me read my comics and game guides without quitting the game on my psp. Nicholas Lovell, was just saying that SALES WISE, people (being ALL people, not just zit covered 1 sided mindless video game nerds) are choosing itouch over psp when they go to futureshop with $300 in their pocket.
how could you blame an average joe for wanting itouch over psp? If your not a serious gamer psp is going to be a huge dissapointment. Just keep that in mind when trying to argue sales figures based on your appreciation of playing certain titles over others. (basically all psp does)
i dont use my psp for audio, its not that bad its just rediculously un practical. I end this rant by asking, WHY THE HECK WOULDNT YOU WANT YOUR MP3/4 PLAYER TO BE AS COOL AS A PSP?!?

 » Power-underwhelming

The PSP has a power edge over the iTouch and iPhone in terms of graphical power. It has a graphics card and a processor capable of playing all the games that are produced except for the lack of the motion tech. Also, its games have about 3 innovative features and lack about 20 to make great games that the PSP can belt out.

If PSP lost its piracy issues (which iTouch will soon share more than likely) then it would have producers try to produce great games... It can pocket power most PS2 games with the lack of the 1 stick and 2 buttons... iTouch has to fit the game with the ability to do tricks all on one screen which sounds like hell street to me.

As far as 5 minute games go, iTouch will probably win. As far as actual "gaming" goes. Its definitely in the PSP's court and will stay there.
